"In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn."
-- Phil Collins
My name is Cynthia Hammons, but I prefer to be called Cindy. I welcome you to my Digital Professional Portfolio. As you explore this collection, you will find artifacts and reflections that demonstrate my qualifications to serve as both a Reading Specialist and Literacy Coach. You will soon discover not only my passion for reading, but my strength in working with upper elementary and adolescent students. As a Reading Specialist, my goal will be to inspire students to work through individual reading difficulties by using sound research practices. I will use data to design interventions which target instruction for each student's individual needs. This will include working with both struggling readers as well as high achievers so that every student is provided an opportunity to meet his or her literacy goals. My role as an Instructional Coach consist of observing teachers in order to identify strengths and weaknesses so I may assist them in creating effective learning environments. In addition, I will design and implement professional development that incorporates campus and district goals while meeting the needs of teachers and students. Since literacy instruction is a dynamic process, I will use a comprehensive approach to set goals that guide students, teachers, and campuses to use research-based literacy practices which will in turn lead to a successful literacy program.
My teaching experience provides me strong insight into the challenges teachers face while working with diverse learners. My credentials include a Masters of Education in Reading and a Bachelors of Science, Cum Laude, in Interdisciplinary Studies with a minor in Education from Texas Woman's University. I currently hold Texas teaching certifications for Generalist Classroom Teacher (Grades 4-8), supplemental English as a Second Language (EC-12), and Reading Specialist (EC-12).
As you navigate through my portfolio, please notice my artifacts and reflections are related to the International Literacy Associations (formerly the International Reading Association) Standards for Reading Professionals. I invite you to review my learning experiences that have qualified me to work as both a Reading Specialist and Instructional Coach.
