"Too often we give children answers to remember rather than problems to solve."

Candidates use instructional approaches, materials, and an
integrated, comprehensive, balanced curriculum to support student learning in
reading and writing.
Curriculum and instruction is the foundation of education. For this reason, teachers must have an ability to design and implement comprehensive instruction that incorporates a variety of texts. As additional research emerges, teachers need to be actively working to evaluate and apply that research to support student learning. Teachers need to have knowledge of both methods and materials in order to prepare students for the demands of our global society in the 21st century.
Exemplar:
To demonstrate my knowledge as well as my ability to analyze a variety of traditional print and digital materials, I have included a link to my blog. This blog was created for my coursework in Literature for Children and Young Adults and was then expanded to include my coursework from Advanced Literature for Young Adults. Through this coursework, I read a wide variety of quality print and digital resources as well as listened to audio books. This foundation will allow me to aid teachers in building and using quality materials that meet the needs and abilities of all learners. It will also provide me the skills to lead school efforts in evaluating and selecting diverse instructional resources to motivate and engage a variety of students. I have also included a Glogster, I created to show my aptitude for combining texts and digital materials so that students can easily move between print and digital resources. A website I created for a Civil War genre study further illustrates my ability to evaluate traditional and digital print as well as pull it together as a student centered activity.
Application:
Another important aspect of curriculum and instruction is the ability to use foundational knowledge to implement varied instructional approaches. I have included such an example with a video analysis from my Phonological and Orthographic Principles practicum. In this exemplar, I was able to adapt my instructional approach by introducing the strategy of using analogy to help my student move from the known to the unknown. The analysis also illustrates my proficiency at developing and implementing instruction that meets the specific needs of my student. This student’s assessments showed him to be well below grade level. Even though he struggled with both reading and writing, I was able motivate my student to maneuver through difficult tasks by incorporating materials and methods that were appropriate and engaging for him. This experience allowed me to recognize the importance of building my personal knowledge so that I can aid teachers in locating and using engaging resources and routines.
